Moneybird alternatives for freelancers: 7 options compared
Updated on 27 July 2026 · 6 min read
Moneybird is one of the best-known accounting packages in the Netherlands, and a solid choice for many businesses. Just not for everyone: if you only send invoices, or you have just grown past a plan limit, you pay a lot for it. Here is what Moneybird does well, why freelancers still look elsewhere, and seven alternatives with their real price and their weak spot.
First, full disclosure: Finq is our own product
You are reading this on Finq's website, so we have an interest in you choosing us. That is why every price below comes with the plan name, so you can verify it with each provider yourself, and why every alternative also lists what it is worse at. Ours included.
What Moneybird does well
Do not leave just to leave. Moneybird is mature software with a long track record, plenty of integrations with other packages, and a name almost every Dutch bookkeeper and accountant knows. If you work with a bookkeeper, or run a web shop with many integrations, that is a real advantage you may miss at a smaller provider.
Happy with Moneybird and on a plan that matches your usage? Then switching is a waste of your time.
Why freelancers still look around
- There is no free plan. If you only want to invoice, you pay from month one.
- Your plan depends on counters, not features. All paid plans do roughly the same things; you are paying for capacity.
- Since 1 July 2026 there are more counters. Under the new four-plan structure (Compact, Start, Groei, Compleet) your plan depends not only on the number of bank transactions, but also on the number of users and bank connections.
- The limits apply per month, even on an annual subscription. A busy month cannot be offset against a quiet one.
Prices per month excluding VAT, paying annually and paying monthly: Compact 3 or 4 euros, Start 15 or 18 euros, Groei 29 or 35 euros, Compleet 41 or 49 euros. For a one-person business with a handful of invoices a month, that is often paying for room you do not use.
Seven alternatives, cheapest first
Per provider, the cheapest plan that lets you file your VAT return, per month. Promotional discounts are not included, because they expire.
Finq, 4.99 euros (Finq Plus)
Invoicing, quotes, time tracking and mileage are free and unlimited; Finq Plus adds your bookkeeping. Including VAT, and no tiers on revenue, transactions or users, so your bill does not change when you have a good year.
Weak spot: the youngest product on this list and the smallest company. No integrations with external web shops or inventory systems, and your bookkeeper probably does not know it yet.
Rompslomp, 7.95 euros (Puur Factuur)
Dutch provider, pleasantly simple, and 5 invoices per month are free. A good pick if you mostly want to invoice and keep the bookkeeping light.
Weak spot: the free plan fills up quickly at 5 invoices a month.
MoneyMonk, 9 euros (Basis)
Built for freelancers, with time tracking and projects included. Starters get 15 months free up to 50,000 euros of revenue.
Weak spot: the tier depends on your revenue, not your usage. Basis runs up to 20,000 euros of annual revenue; go over it and you are moved to Pro automatically, at 32.50 euros per month. So a good year makes your subscription more than three times as expensive. Also note: MoneyMonk has new prices, which apply to existing customers from 1 August 2026.
e-Boekhouden.nl, 9.95 euros (ZZP)
The widely used allrounder: complete, feature-rich, and starters get 15 months free.
Weak spot: the interface feels more dated than the rest, and all those features mean more to work through.
Gekko, 12 euros (Premium)
Strong on hours, projects and receipts on the go; invoices and quotes are free and unlimited.
Weak spot: aimed more at hours and projects than at complete bookkeeping.
Tellow, 12.99 euros (Basis)
Plenty of automation around receipts and bank transactions. The free plan gives you 3 invoices per month, carrying Tellow's logo.
Weak spot: that logo on your free invoices, and the free plan is small.
Jortt, 19.95 euros (ZZP)
Invoices, quotes and hours are free, and the bookkeeping is largely automated.
Weak spot: the most expensive plan on this list once you add the bookkeeping.
How to choose in five minutes
- Count the bank transactions in your busiest month, not your average one. That is what Moneybird charges you on.
- Check how far you are from the next tier. At MoneyMonk that is your revenue, at Moneybird your transactions. If you are just under it, your price is temporary.
- Decide whether you really need bookkeeping or only invoices, quotes and hours. At several providers that saves you the entire subscription.
- Check that your bookkeeper works with the package, if you have one.
- Compare annual and monthly payment. At Moneybird paying annually is about a sixth cheaper, but it commits you for a year.
Mind the VAT when comparing
Most providers quote prices excluding VAT, and that is a 21 percent difference: 15 euros excluding VAT is 18.15 euros on your bill. As an entrepreneur you reclaim that VAT every quarter through your VAT return, so a fair comparison uses amounts excluding VAT.
One exception: under the small business scheme you do not get that VAT back. Then the amount including VAT is what it actually costs you.
If you do switch
The sting of a switch is not in moving your clients across, but in your invoice numbering and the seven-year retention rule on what you leave behind. So first read how to switch without losing your records, and see all providers side by side on the pricing page.
