Freelancing in the Netherlands?
Finq speaks your language.

You registered with the KVK, the first clients are in, and then the Dutch tax world starts: btw, inkomstenbelasting, Zvw, KOR. Finq is a Dutch invoicing and accounting app that runs entirely in English, so you can see what you are filing and why. Invoicing is free.

Invoicing free forever · No installation · Export all your data any time

What you get here that a Dutch-only package does not give you

The whole app in English

One button in the top bar puts every screen, every field and every bit of help text in English. The language of your invoices is set separately, per client, so a Dutch client still receives a Dutch invoice.

English invoices that meet Dutch requirements

English wording, Dutch rules: sequential numbering, your Chamber of Commerce number, your VAT identification number and the VAT rate per line. What the Dutch Tax Administration wants to see is on there.

Invoice in dollars, pounds or francs

Pick the currency per invoice. Finq proposes the European Central Bank rate of your invoice date and prints the VAT amount and the total in euros as well, which is what the law here asks for. Your books stay in euros.

PayPal and your bank, imported

Import your bank export or your PayPal activity file. PayPal fees are booked as costs, payments in other currencies are converted and withdrawals to your own bank are skipped. Part of Finq Plus.

A VAT return you can actually read

Finq fills boxes 1a through 5b from your invoices and expenses and shows the Dutch term next to each box. The tax portal itself exists only in Dutch, so you know which number goes into which field.

Know what to set aside

Finq works out the income tax and the Zvw healthcare contribution over your profit so far, with the official figures. What you keep aside is then your own situation, not a rule of thumb.

A knowledge base written in English

Guides on registering with the KVK, the M-form, the 30% ruling, residence permits, invoicing in English and working here without speaking Dutch. Free to read, no account needed.

Free for invoicing, EUR 4.99 for the books

Invoices, quotes, clients, projects, hours and trips are free and unlimited. Expenses, bank imports, the VAT return and reports are Finq Plus: EUR 4.99 a month incl. VAT, with 30 days to try it.

The Dutch tax world in five minutes

Six terms decide almost everything about your admin here. Each one has a guide in English.

  • Btw (VAT)You charge 21% (sometimes 9% or 0%) and file a return every quarter, by the end of the month following that quarter. Finq prepares the boxes; you copy them over.Filing your VAT return
  • Inkomstenbelasting (income tax)Once a year, over your profit, due by 1 May for the year before. Prefer to pay in instalments? Then you ask for a provisional assessment. From revenue to assessment
  • The M-formDid you move to or leave the Netherlands during the year? Then your return for that year is the M-form, not the normal online return. The M-form explained
  • Zvw contributionOn top of income tax you pay an income-dependent healthcare contribution over your profit. That is not the premium for your own health insurance; you pay that monthly to your insurer. How much tax do you pay?
  • KOR (small business scheme)Under a set annual turnover you can stay outside VAT altogether. Convenient, but you cannot reclaim the VAT on your costs either, and you are committed for three years. The KOR explained
  • Urencriterium (the hours criterion)Work at least 1,225 hours in your business in a calendar year and you qualify for the self-employed deduction. Finq counts your hours per month. The hours criterion

What you still need outside Finq

Finq is your administration, not your government. You arrange these yourself, and it is better to know that up front.

  • A BSN and DigiDYour citizen service number comes from your municipality when you register there; DigiD is the login for the tax portal and for almost every government service. Without those two you cannot file at all.
  • A KVK registrationYou register your business with the Chamber of Commerce and receive a KVK number and a VAT identification number. Finq puts both on your invoices.Registering with the KVK
  • The right residence statusWith an EU nationality you can start right away. Otherwise you need a permit that allows self-employment, such as the DAFT permit for US citizens.Visas and residence permits
  • Clarity about the 30% rulingThe ruling is for employees. A sole trader does not qualify; only the route through your own BV can, under conditions. The 30% ruling and freelancing
  • An account you can work withA Dutch business bank account is not required by law, but it keeps private and business apart and makes importing your statements a lot simpler.Business account: required or not?
  • Dutch health insuranceIf you live here, you take out basic health insurance yourself. The Zvw contribution over your profit comes on top of that.Health insurance for freelancers

Made in the Netherlands, in English

Finq is built in the Netherlands by a freelancer who files the same returns you do. The app, the invoices, the guides and this page exist in English because a lot of the people freelancing here do not read Dutch, and the paperwork is complicated enough as it is.

Support runs in English too. There is a feedback button inside the app: your message, together with the screen you were on, goes straight to the person who builds Finq. No call centre and no ticket system, so a human reads it.

What Finq is not: an accountant. It prepares your figures and your VAT boxes, and it will not tell you whether the KOR suits you or whether you meet the hours criterion. For questions like that the guides are a start, and a Dutch adviser is the answer.

Frequently asked questions

Is Finq available in English?

Yes. One button in the top bar puts the whole app in English: every screen, every field and every bit of help text. The public pages and the guides exist in English too. The language of your invoices is separate from that and is set per client.

Can I invoice in dollars or pounds as an international?

Yes, and it is part of the free plan. Per invoice you pick euros, dollars, pounds or Swiss francs. Finq proposes the ECB rate of your invoice date and also prints the VAT amount and the total in euros, as the law requires. Your books stay in euros, so your return and your reports still add up.

Does Finq file my VAT return for me?

No, Finq helps you fill it in. Boxes 1a through 5b are built from your invoices and expenses, with the Dutch term shown next to each box, so you know which amount belongs in which field. You submit it yourself in the tax portal with DigiD; that portal exists only in Dutch.

Do I need a Dutch bank account for Finq?

No. You invoice with any account your client can transfer to; you enter the account number on the invoice yourself. A Dutch business account does make importing your statements easier, and the iDEAL payment link runs through your own Mollie account.

Can I use Finq before I have a BSN or Chamber of Commerce number?

Creating an account takes nothing but an email address and a password, so you can start making invoices right away. Your Chamber of Commerce number and your VAT identification number do belong on an invoice, and without a BSN and DigiD you cannot file a return at all. You arrange those with your municipality and the Chamber of Commerce, not in Finq.

Is there an accountant behind Finq?

No. Finq is made by a freelancer who files the same returns you do, and it calculates with the official figures of the Dutch Tax Administration. Finq does not give advice about your own situation: whether the KOR suits you, or whether the BV route is smart, is a conversation to have with an adviser.
