A business bank account as a freelancer: required or not?

Updated on 10 July 2026 · 4 min read

Do you need a business bank account as a freelancer? Legally not, if you have a sole proprietorship. Still, a separate account is almost always a good idea. The rules, the pros and cons, and what to watch for.

Legally not required (for a sole proprietorship)

If you have a sole proprietorship or are a freelancer, you are not legally required to open a business account. You may in principle receive your business income on your private account. A private limited company (bv) is different: it is a separate legal entity and needs its own account.

Mind your bank's terms

Here is the catch: many banks do not allow business use of a private account in their terms. If you structurally receive business payments on your private account, the bank can ask you to open a business account after all, or in the extreme cancel your account. Not legally required is not the same as always allowed.

Why it is smart anyway

  • Overview. Keeping business and private separate makes your administration and VAT return far easier. You do not have to pick apart every transaction.
  • In an audit. The Tax Administration can request your bank statements. A separate business account immediately shows what is business, without you having to reveal private spending.
  • Professionalism. Paying "J. Jansen" reads differently from "Jansen Design". An IBAN in your business name inspires confidence.
  • Peace of mind. Your business buffer for VAT and tax sits apart, so you do not spend it by accident.

What to look for when choosing

  • Costs: business accounts usually cost a few euros a month. Compare monthly and transaction fees.
  • Integrations: can you link the account to your bookkeeping, or import transactions easily?
  • Speed of opening: some providers arrange it in a day, others take longer.

Do not see those monthly fees as wasted money, by the way: they are a deductible business expense.
