e-Boekhouden alternatives for freelancers: 7 options compared
Updated on 3 August 2026 · 6 min read
e-Boekhouden.nl is one of the most widely used accounting packages in the Netherlands, with a long track record and a sharp price. It still does not suit everyone: it is built as a full accounting system, and you notice that when all you want is to invoice. What it does well, where it pinches for freelancers, and seven alternatives with their real price.
First, full disclosure: Finq is our own product
You are reading this on Finq's website, so we have an interest in you choosing us. That is why every price below comes with the plan name, so you can verify it yourself, and why every alternative lists its weak spot. Ours included.
What e-Boekhouden does well
Do not leave just to leave. e-Boekhouden is a mature allrounder: complete, stable, rich in features and integrations, and almost every Dutch bookkeeper knows it. The ZZP plan at 9.95 euros per month (excluding VAT) is far from expensive, and starters get 15 months free. If you want full bookkeeping and feel at home among ledger accounts, it serves you well.
Where it pinches for freelancers
- The interface feels dated compared with the newer generation.
- It thinks like a bookkeeper. Ledgers, journals, day books: complete, but many freelancers just want to send an invoice and keep a receipt.
- Many unused features make it harder to find your way; the menus were designed with accounting firms in mind.
- Mind the plan structure. There are several plans and separate modules, and not every variant includes everything; check on e-boekhouden.nl what your plan actually contains.
- After the 15 free months the meter simply starts running; there is no permanently free plan.
Seven alternatives, cheapest first
Per provider, the cheapest plan that lets you file your VAT return, per month, excluding VAT unless stated otherwise. Promotional discounts are not included, because they expire.
Finq, 4.99 euros (Finq Plus)
Invoicing, quotes, time tracking and mileage are free and unlimited; Finq Plus adds your bookkeeping. Including VAT, with no tiers on revenue, transactions or users.
Weak spot: the youngest product on this list and the smallest company. No web shop or inventory integrations, and your bookkeeper probably does not know it yet.
Rompslomp, 7.95 euros (Puur Factuur)
Dutch provider, pleasantly simple, and 5 invoices per month are free.
Weak spot: the free plan fills up quickly.
MoneyMonk, 9 euros (Basis)
Built for freelancers, with time tracking and projects included; starters get 15 months free.
Weak spot: the tier depends on your revenue. Basis runs up to 20,000 euros a year; above that you move to Pro at 32.50 euros per month automatically.
Gekko, 12 euros (Premium)
Strong on hours, projects and receipts on the go; invoices and quotes are free and unlimited.
Weak spot: aimed more at hours and projects than at complete bookkeeping.
Tellow, 12.99 euros (Basis)
Plenty of automation around receipts and bank transactions; the free plan gives 3 invoices per month.
Weak spot: those free invoices carry Tellow's logo, and the free plan is small.
Moneybird, 18 euros (Start), 15 euros paying annually
The best-known name, with many integrations and a polished interface. Since 1 July 2026 there are four plans; Start is the cheapest with VAT filing.
Weak spot: your plan depends on counters (transactions, users, bank connections) with monthly limits, and there is no free plan.
Jortt, 19.95 euros (ZZP)
Invoices, quotes and hours are free, and the bookkeeping is largely automated.
Weak spot: the most expensive plan here once you add bookkeeping.
How to choose
- Decide whether you need full bookkeeping or mainly invoices, quotes and hours; at several providers that saves the entire subscription.
- Look at the tier boundary, not just the entry price: revenue at MoneyMonk, monthly counters at Moneybird.
- Calculate with the price after the promotion. 15 free months are nice, but compare on what you pay afterwards.
- Check that your bookkeeper works with it, if you have one.
- Compare excluding VAT. You reclaim it through your VAT return, unless you use the small business scheme.
If you do switch
The sting of a switch is in your invoice numbering and the seven-year retention rule, not in moving your clients. First read how to switch without losing your records, see all providers side by side on the pricing page, or read the Moneybird comparison too.
